Human nature?

I seems as though almost the entire class would agree that animals should have a moral status. The logic seems to dictate that killing and consuming animals would go against the moral status we apply to animals, yet I would bet some of the students in class do consume meat (myself included) So my question is, is it human nature to consume meat even if we find it morally wrong?

I am not trying to say that it is or isn't morally wrong, I have personally not come to a decision on what I believe yet, my point is just that human nature may be to eat meat anyways even if our thoughts tell us otherwise.

I agree with your post, as I too eat meat. I think the conclusion we can draw is that it is okay, as human beings, to consume other animals for food. We need the protein from that meat as a part of our diet, and without it, we would not be able to function in a healthy manner, unless we took certain pills to supplement our diet-which could be costly and an unavailable option for many people given their financial status. Our needs supercede those of animals because we are considered a higher level of sentience-that is to say, we are more intelligent, we have a higher conciousness and awareness of ourselves and our surroundings than other animals. However, I do think we should be careful in how we hunt animals and use them as resources, and try to be as humane and just as possible in our relationships with them. As beings of higher intelligence and of a more aware presence, this is our duty.
